- The poacher had no sooner set his salmon nets than he was confronted by the property owner's two sons. A fist fight ensued mid-stream. Before long the elderly landowner appeared astride his horse, riding into the river he began to reprimand the intruder. Suddenly, and without warning, the poacher hurled his spear delivering a mortal blow that knocked the nearly blind old man off of his mount and into the river.
It was the year 987, the river was the Vatnsdalsa in Northwestern Iceland and the landowner was Ingimundur the elder. Ingimundur was one of the first Norsemen to settle in Iceland and the first to claim land in the Valley of the Vatnsdalsa. According to the Icelandic sagas the poacher had been given rights to fish the river but only when no one else was present. He just wasn't playing by the rules.
